What is it?


  • The GI Bill is a bill that provided education for those returning from War War II and also gave them a year of unemployment compensation.
  • The bill was originally called the "Servicemen's Readjustment Act".

When was it created and why?

  • It was created in 1944 for the purpose of preventing another Bonus March of 1932 and to prevent another Depression after War War I.

Did it achieve its goals?
  • It did achieve its goals. It increased enrollment to higher education by a significant amount.

How were African Americans affected?

Post 9/11 GI Bill?

  • The post 9/11 provided financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after 9/11/01, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. The person had to of had received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the post 9/11 GI Bill.
  • It became effective for training on or after August 1, 2009.
